Traductrice littéraire de l’anglais

Les livres et les mots ont toujours occupé une place centrale dans ma vie. Transmettre des émotions, voilà ce qui m’intéresse. Je l’ai d’abord fait au théâtre en tant que comédienne et codirectrice du Théâtre Daniel Sorano à Vincennes, dans les années 1980 ; et depuis lors, en traduisant des romans ­ -signés par les écrivains australiens Alex Miller et Patrick White (Prix Nobel de littérature 1973), les romancières africaines Yvonne A. Owuor (Kenya) et  Nadifa Mohamed (Somalie) (pour plus de détails, voir ma bibliographie). Trouver le mot et l’expression justes, individualiser la façon de parler de chaque personnage, travailler sur le rythme d’un texte sont mes grands plaisirs de traductrice.

Sur le plan académique, j’ai poursuivi des études d’anglais et d’américain : admissible Normale Sup ; maîtrise en littérature américaine à l’Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris III (Gertrude Stein and Painting, mention très bien) ; et première année de doctorat (DEA), toujours à Paris III, sur le théâtre américain des années 1980 – Bob Wilson, Richard Foreman, Meredith Monk –. J’ai également obtenu une licence en Etudes théâtrales (Paris III). J’ai vécu aux États-Unis et suis passée par la case enseignement (aux États-Unis, University of Oklahoma ; et en France, école d’ingénieurs et université Paris X).

Ce sont ces expériences riches et diverses, et bien sûr mes nombreuses lectures, qui me nourrissent dans l’exercice de mon métier de traductrice littéraire.

Books and words have always been central to my life. As far back as I can remember, I have always been interested in transmitting emotions. First it was on stage as an actress and co-director of Théâtre Daniel Sorano in the Parisian suburb of Vincennes in the 1980s;  and since, through my translation of novels – by Australian writers Alex Miller and Nobel-prize winner Patrick White, African writers Yvonne A. Owuor from Kenya and Nadifa Mohamed from Somalia etc. (for more details, see my bibliography). Finding the right word and expression, customizing the manner of speaking of each character, working on the rhythm of a text are my great pleasures as a translator.

From an academic point of view, I have studied British and American English for the highly-competitive entrance examinations to Ecole Normale Supérieure ; graduated from Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris III ; got a Master’s Degree in American Literature (obtained with honours, my thesis was entitled Gertrude Stein and Painting); and completed a first Ph.D. year (D.E.A.), with a thesis on the American Theater of the 80s – Bob Wilson, Richard Foreman, Meredith Monk – ; I was awarded a Bachelor’s Degree in Theatrical Studies from Université Sorbonne Nouvelle Paris III as well. I have taught in the USA at the University of Oklahoma, as well as in France at an Engineering school and at Université Paris X.

The fertile terrain of my background constantly enriches my daily practice as a literary translator.
